Plant Origin—Tribulus Terrestris

Tribulus Terrestris, also known as puncture vine, caltrop, or tribulus, grows in sandy dunes and along roadsides, and is distributed across most regions of China, with main production in Henan, Hebei, Shandong, and Anhui. It often grows in wastelands and fields and is commonly a weed. Tribulus Terrestris is categorized into white and soft varieties. The dry fruit contains 3.5% fatty oil, along with small amounts of essential oil, tannins, resins, sterols, potassium salts, and trace alkaloids; it also contains 1.47% saponins. The seeds contain alkaloids such as harman and harmine but do not contain saponins. In clinical use, Tribulus seeds are primarily employed for liver soothing, wind dispelling, diuretic, and vision-enhancing purposes.
