Plant Source—Valerian Root

Valerian root (Latin name: Valeriana officinalis L.) is a tall perennial herb in the Valerianaceae family, found across a broad range from northeast to southwest China. It is also widely distributed in Europe and western Asia. It is commonly cultivated in Chinese medicinal gardens. The rhizome and root are used medicinally to relieve wind, calm spasms, and treat bruises. Its stems and leaves are consumed by the larvae of certain Lepidoptera species (butterflies and moths). Valerian root has a calming effect on the nervous system, enhancing cortical inhibition, reducing reflex excitability, and relieving smooth muscle spasms. Some components of valerian root can lower blood pressure in animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, mice), related to its parasympathetic-like effects, carotid sinus reflex blockade, and central nervous system suppression. Valerian root also has antimicrobial properties, particularly effective against Gram-positive bacteria, and some diuretic effects.
