Kava (also known as kawa, kava, kavakava, or yaqona) is a member of the pepper family and is a perennial shrub that primarily grows on the islands of the South Pacific. It has a growth period of 2-5 years and reaches heights of 2-4 meters. Kava can be wild or cultivated, with both the roots and stems used for medicinal and culinary purposes. Its chemical components include kavalactones and kava-pyrone, with six main kavalactones: kavalactone, dihydrokavalactone, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, methoxy-pyrone, and de-methoxy-pyrone. Kava has various pharmacological effects, including sedative, hypnotic, antimicrobial, and analgesic properties, and is widely used in nutritional supplements and herbal preparations in Europe and America.
