Licorice root, scientifically known as Glycyrrhiza, is a member of the legume family. It is a perennial herb with thick roots and rhizomes, measuring between 0.5 to 3 cm in diameter. The outer skin of the root is brown, while the inside is yellow and has a sweet taste.
Licorice root extract: This extract is derived from specific varieties or the stems of licorice root. It penetrates deep into the skin while maintaining high activity, effectively inhibiting various enzymes involved in melanin production (such as tyrosinase). It is a fast, efficient, safe, and eco-friendly additive for sunscreens, skin whitening, and spot removal in cosmetics. Additionally, licorice root extract prevents skin roughness and has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
The root and rhizome tissue cells of licorice contain highly potent antioxidants that help with skin depigmentation and the lightening of dark spots. The main components, glabridin and glycyrrhizin, are known as the "gold standard" for skin whitening. These ingredients provide strong antioxidant activity, help lighten dark spots, whiten skin, and have antibacterial properties. They can also be used as a fragrance, while soothing the skin.
Effects of licorice root extract on the skin:
- Lightening age spots: Licorice root has excellent skincare benefits, as it can lighten age spots, moisturize the skin, and improve the skin's ability to resist aging.
- Antioxidant: Licorice root contains various antioxidant compounds that are quickly absorbed by the body, promoting tissue regeneration.
- Anti-aging: Licorice root is rich in flavonoids and polysaccharides, which are natural antioxidants. These compounds not only block oxidative reactions in the body but also accelerate the metabolism of lipid peroxides. Lipid peroxides and free radicals are key contributors to aging, so reducing their levels significantly slows down the aging process.
Licorice root extract is suitable for eight skin types: oily skin, sensitive skin, resilient skin, non-pigmented skin, firm skin, dry skin, wrinkled skin, and pigmented skin.
