Plant Origin—Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto [Serenoa repens (Bartr.) J.K. Small], also known as Saw Palmetto or Saw Palm, is a common palm plant found in hot regions of North America. It is the only representative of the Saw Palmetto genus and is an important medicinal palm plant, also used as an ornamental plant for gardens. Saw Palmetto contains digestible carbohydrates, fats, and other nutrients, with 2/3 of its fats being free fatty acids such as capric acid, octanoic acid, hexanoic acid, lauric acid, palmitic acid, and oleic acid. These substances are both edible and medicinal. As a health supplement, liquid extracts or pressed oils from Saw Palmetto berries are effective in treating various respiratory and urinary reproductive issues in both men and women. Saw Palmetto also has anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, sedative, and endocrine-regulating properties.
