Jujube Seed comes from the seeds of the Rhamnaceae plant, Jujube. The seeds are harvested in the fall when the fruit ripens, soaked overnight, the pulp is scrubbed off, and the seeds are removed from the crushed shells and dried.

【Plant Characteristics】

Deciduous shrub or small tree, 1-3 meters tall. Older branches are brown, young ones are green. Branches have two types of spines: needle-shaped, about 2 cm long, and hooked, about 5 mm long. Leaves are alternate, with very short petioles and needle-like stipules. Leaf blades are elliptical to ovate-lanceolate, 2.5-5 cm long and 1.2-3 cm wide, with a short, sharp tip and uneven base, and finely serrated edges. Flowers grow in clusters of 2-3 in the axils of leaves, small and yellow-green. Sepals are 5 and ovate-triangular; petals are small, 5, alternate with the sepals; stamens are 5, slightly longer than the petals; ovary is elliptical, 2-chambered, embedded in the flower disk. Fruit is nearly spherical, 1-1.4 cm in diameter, blunt at the tip, dark red when ripe, sour in taste. Flowering occurs in April-May, fruiting in September-October. The plant’s root bark, spines, leaves, and flowers are also used medicinally, each with its own specific uses.

【Medicinal Characteristics】

Jujube Seed is flat and round or oval, 5-9mm long, 5-7mm wide, and about 3mm thick. The surface is reddish-purple or purple-brown, smooth and glossy, sometimes with cracks. One side is flat, with a raised longitudinal line in the middle; the other side is slightly convex. One end is concave with a line-like hilum, while the other end has a small raised point. The seed coat is brittle, the endosperm is white, the cotyledons are yellowish, oily, with an oil content of about 30.8%. It has a faint odor and bland taste.

【Processing Methods】

  1. Jujube Seed: Place the raw seed in a bamboo sieve and submerge it in a water tank. The shells sink while the seeds float. Scoop the seeds, dry them under the sun.
  2. Roasted Jujube Seed: Roast clean Jujube Seeds in a pan over low heat until the skin swells and turns slightly yellow. Remove and cool.
  3. Charred Jujube Seed: Roast clean Jujube Seeds over high heat until about half turn black-red. Remove and cool.
